Curves Ahead: My Custom Archway Makeover

Over the past few years, I’ve slowly but surely added character to my home — one molding at a time. From crown moldings that kiss the ceiling to baseboards that ground each room, and picture moldings that add that timeless touch, each addition brought a little more personality into the space.
But there was one feature I had been eyeing for a while — a custom arch.Specifically, over the doorway between my dining room and kitchen. I wanted something graceful, architectural, and subtle enough to blend with the rest of the trim work.
Of course, true to The Jugaad Way, I wasn’t about to splurge on custom millwork. I wanted to see if I could do it on a budget — without compromising on style.
The Challenge: Build an Arch Without Breaking the Bank
I started looking for affordable ways to create a curved molding effect. After a bit of trial and error (and a few trips to the molding aisle), I figured out a solution using just three types of off-the-shelf moldings:
Corner Molding – outside edges
Casing Molding – to frame the top and the base
Lattice Molding – to create definition and a smooth finish
When paired creatively, they worked like magic.
The Process:
The Result:
A stunning, custom-looking arched doorway that cost a fraction of what custom trim would! It adds just the right amount of softness to the space and draws the eye without shouting for attention.
And honestly? It might be one of my favorite DIYs to date.
Tips If You Want to Try This:
Play with scale: Not all arches need to be dramatic. Even a slight curve can add elegance.
Use what’s available: Don’t get hung up on the "perfect" piece of molding. Sometimes the magic is in the mix.
Fill and caulk generously: That’s the secret to making separate pieces feel seamless.
Prime and paint last — that’s when the real transformation happens.
Whether you're a DIY newbie or a seasoned home tinkerer, molding projects are a beautiful way to elevate any space. And if you're craving some curves in your interiors — don’t be afraid to experiment.
After all, that’s The Jugaad Way.
